Studio Paolina Rome

Your first day begins almost at your doorstep, with one of the most meaningful and beautiful churches in Rome.
Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore
Just a short walk from Studio Paolina, Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is one of Rome’s four papal basilicas and one of the city’s great artistic and spiritual treasures. Arrive early, when the interior is still quiet and the morning light catches the gold mosaics. The basilica has also become an important pilgrimage destination because Pope Francis is buried inside, in the lateral nave between the Pauline Chapel and the Sforza Chapel. It is a moving and reflective place to begin a slow Roman journey.
Coffee in Monti
From the basilica, continue into Monti, one of Rome’s most charming historic neighborhoods. Stop at Caffè della Madonna dei Monti for a cappuccino and cornetto, then wander through Via Panisperna and Via dei Serpenti, where artisan shops, vintage boutiques, and quiet residential corners reveal a neighborhood that still feels truly lived in.
San Pietro in Vincoli
A gentle uphill walk brings you to San Pietro in Vincoli, home to Michelangelo’s Moses. Compared with Rome’s more crowded landmarks, it feels wonderfully calm, almost secretive, and fits perfectly into the slow-travel mood of the day.
Lunch in Monti
For lunch, settle into Trattoria da Valentino, a classic local address where Roman comfort food is served with no unnecessary fuss.
Afternoon Pause and Sunset
Spend the afternoon at the Giardini di Via del Colosseo, a small green corner with evocative glimpses of ancient Rome, then head to Colle Oppio for sunset. Watching the Colosseum glow from above is one of the most romantic ways to end a first day in Rome.
Dinner
End the evening at Osteria Oliva, a cozy dinner spot in Monti that feels intimate and local.
Public Transport Notes
Most of Day 1 is easily done on foot from Studio Paolina.
If needed, Cavour Metro Station is nearby and can be used for short transfers in the area.
